SUKAJAN FACTORYでは、ヴィンテージスカジャン、刺繍、パッチ、写真、書籍などの資料を通して、スカジャンの歴史とその背景を研究しています。
スカジャンは、戦後日本の社会や米兵、日本の刺繍産業、そして当時の人々の記憶が交差する中から生まれました。
残された実物や資料を一つずつ検証し、その技術や時代背景を記録するとともに、展示や制作を通して現代へ伝えていくことを目指しています。
SUKAJAN FACTORY researches the history and cultural background of sukajan through original vintage jackets, embroidery, patches, photographs, publications, and archival materials.
Sukajan emerged from the intersection of postwar Japan, American servicemen, Japanese embroidery industries, and the personal memories of the people who lived through that period.
By studying surviving garments and historical materials, we aim to document their techniques and context, and to carry this history forward through research, exhibitions, and new creations
スカジャンの歴史には、現在でも十分に記録されていない部分が多く残されています。
いつ、どこで、誰によって作られたのか。
どのような刺繍店や職人が関わり、どのように米兵の手に渡ったのか。
ヴィンテージスカジャンや当時の写真、書籍、パッチ、タグなどを照らし合わせながら、断片的に残された情報を収集・検証しています。
一つの資料だけで結論を出すのではなく、複数の資料と実物を比較することで、より正確な歴史を探ることを大切にしています。
Much of the early history of sukajan remains only partially documented.
When and where were these jackets made? Who designed and embroidered them? How were they sold to American servicemen?
By comparing vintage jackets with photographs, publications, patches, labels, and other surviving materials, we collect and examine fragments of evidence in an effort to better understand their history.
Rather than relying on a single source, our research is based on comparing multiple historical references with original objects.
現存するヴィンテージスカジャンは、当時の技術や文化を知るための重要な資料です。
刺繍の表と裏、糸の重なり、生地、リブ、ファスナー、縫製、図案の構成など、現在の写真だけでは分からない情報が実物には残されています。
また、スカジャンだけでなく、スーベニアパッチ、シャツ、写真、書籍なども、当時の日本の刺繍産業やデザインを理解するための重要な手掛かりになります。
Original vintage sukajan are important historical records of the techniques and culture of their time.
The front and reverse of the embroidery, thread layering, fabrics, ribbing, zippers, construction, and composition all contain information that cannot always be understood from photographs alone.
Souvenir patches, shirts, photographs, publications, and related objects also provide valuable clues to the Japanese embroidery industry and design culture of the period.
1950年代に日本で製造されたヴィンテージパッチの再現プロジェクトを進めています。
足踏み式ミシンによる横振り刺繍を用い、オリジナルのパッチを観察しながら、当時の刺繍方法、糸の運び、重なり、図案の表現などを研究しています。
目的は、単に見た目をコピーすることではありません。
実際に当時に近い方法で制作することで、完成したヴィンテージだけを見ていては分からない、当時の職人の考え方や制作工程を理解することを目指しています。
We are currently working on a reproduction project of vintage patches originally made in Japan in the 1950s.
Using a foot-operated sewing machine and traditional Yokofuri embroidery, we study original examples in an effort to understand the stitching methods, thread movement, layering, and visual character of the period.
The purpose is not simply to copy their appearance.
By recreating them using techniques close to those of the time, we hope to better understand the processes and decisions of the original Japanese embroiderers.
研究した資料やヴィンテージスカジャンは、保管するだけでなく、展示を通して実際に見ていただくことも重要だと考えています。
実物の刺繍や素材、経年変化を見ることで、写真や文章だけでは伝わらないスカジャンの魅力や時代性を感じることができます。
SUKAJAN FACTORYでは、スカジャンの歴史、職人技、文化的背景を伝えるための展示活動にも取り組んでいます。
We believe historical objects should not only be preserved, but also shared.
Seeing original embroidery, materials, construction, and the effects of time allows visitors to experience aspects of sukajan that cannot be fully communicated through photographs or text alone.
SUKAJAN FACTORY takes part in exhibitions that introduce the history, craftsmanship, and cultural background of the Japanese souvenir jacket.
