OUR MISSION
スカジャンは、第二次世界大戦後に誕生したスーベニアです。
スカジャンと戦争は切り離すことのできない、いわばコインの裏表の関係にあり、この文脈を抜きにしてスカジャンを語ることはできません。
残念ながら日本においては、戦争の歴史が十分に、あるいは率直に語られてきたとは言えず、しばしば目を背けるべきものとして扱われてきました。
スカジャンは、アメリカ文化と日本文化の交差によって生まれた、極めて稀で歪さを持つスーベニアです。
それは戦後を生き抜くために人々がやむを得ず生み出した文化的混淆の産物であり、「悲しみを帯びたメイド・イン・ジャパン」とも言える存在です。
スカジャンは、戦後わずか十年ほどの限られた時期に生まれた、時代の仇花とも言える文化です。
私たちは、この遺産に敬意を払い再評価するとともに、その魅力を単に売るためではなく、理解され、受け継がれるべきものとして世界に伝えていくことを使命としています。
Sukajan originated as a souvenir in the aftermath of World War II.
Sukajan and war are inseparable—two sides of the same coin—and it is impossible to speak about Sukajan without acknowledging this context.
Unfortunately, in Japan, the history of war has not always been fully or openly taught, and it is often treated as something to be avoided or left unspoken.
Sukajan is an extremely rare and uniquely distorted form of souvenir, born from the crossover of American and Japanese cultures.
It is a “sorrowful Made in Japan,” a product of cultural hybridity—created out of necessity as people struggled to survive in the postwar era.
Sukajan can be seen as a fleeting cultural bloom of its time, produced only during a brief period of roughly a decade after the war.
Our mission is to respect and re-evaluate this heritage, and to share its appeal with the world—not merely as something to sell, but as something to be understood and passed on.

染め・織り・刺繍の多様性は、日本の文化的遺産における誇りであり、それらの要素を取り入れることこそが、スーベニアとして誕生したスカジャンを現代において作る意義であると考えています。
縫製や刺繍においては、熟練の職人たちが一針一針、正確に形を作り上げていきます。
多くの職人が60代・70代と高齢化が進む中で、私たちはその比類なき経験と技術を次世代へと繋ぐ「架け橋」でありたいと考えています。
We create Sukajan that incorporate traditional crafts rooted in various regions across Japan.
The diversity of dyeing, weaving, and embroidery is a source of pride in Japan’s cultural heritage, and we believe that integrating these elements gives true meaning to creating Sukajan today—garments originally born as souvenirs. In sewing and embroidery, skilled artisans shape each piece with precision, stitch by stitch.
As many of these craftsmen are now in their 60s and 70s, we aim to serve as a bridge—carrying their unparalleled experience and craftsmanship forward to the next generation.
戦後75年以上が経過した現在に至るまで、スカジャンに関する本格的な研究や批評は、ほとんど行われてきませんでした。
その多くは、ファッションという視点から表層的に語られるにとどまっていました。
私たちは、スカジャンが誕生した当時の戦争という非日常を生きた人々の暮らし、
その絵柄のルーツ、さらに2〜3世紀にわたる日本文化の文脈を辿りながらこの服を考察することで、はじめてその本質を理解し、その価値を世界に伝えることができると考えています。
この信念のもと研究を続け、
SUKAJAN FACTORYとして、私たちは展示会、出版、講演、オーダーといった形で、その成果を国内外に向けて発信しています。
Even now, more than 75 years after the end of the war, there has been virtually no in-depth research or critical study of Sukajan.
It has largely been discussed only from a fashion perspective, focusing merely on its surface.
We believe that only by examining the lives of the people who lived through the extraordinary circumstances of war at the time Sukajan was born,
tracing the origins of its motifs, and exploring the broader context of Japanese culture going back two to three centuries,
can we truly understand this garment and convey its value to the world.
With this belief, we continue our research,
and as SUKAJAN FACTORY, we present our work both domestically and internationally through exhibitions, publications, lectures, and custom orders.
